International Commercial Terms (Incoterms®)

Understanding the standard trade terms used in international commercial transactions

Incoterms® are internationally recognized standard trade terms created by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). They define the responsibilities of buyers and sellers for the delivery of goods under sales contracts, particularly regarding transport, insurance, and customs clearance.

EXW - Ex Works

Seller's obligation: Makes goods available at their premises.
Buyer's obligation: Responsible for all costs and risks from seller's premises to destination.
Best for: Domestic sales or when buyer has logistics expertise

FCA - Free Carrier

Seller's obligation: Delivers goods to carrier nominated by buyer at agreed location.
Buyer's obligation: Bears all costs and risks from that point onward.
Best for: Container shipments and multimodal transport

CPT - Carriage Paid To

Seller's obligation: Pays freight to named destination.
Buyer's obligation: Bears risk from delivery to carrier, responsible for insurance.

CIP - Carriage and Insurance Paid To
